Designing Containers

"...the best plant associations have something alike and something different."

Catherine Ziegler The Harmonious Garden

Follow two guidelines when designing containers:

  1. Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers for content: A simple method of assembling container gardens is to include thrillers, fillers and spillers. Thrillers are plants which rivet attention first: they are striking in color, shape or size (sword-shaped plants are common thrillers). Fillers are the plants around the thrillers. Spillers provide vertical balance, spilling or trailing over the container side.
  2. Something alike, Something different, for selecting and combining plants.

Red Round Shape

The elegant repetition of one simple element: the pink color, in the pots, building, and containers, makes this a stunning composition.

Nice Repetition

Here the fillers are also spillers. The simple green and gray color scheme creates harmony in this composition. This is an excellent use of repetition.

Something alike and something different: all pansies, but of a carefully coordinated blend.

Appealing by themselves

Some plants are so visually appealing by themselves, that adding anything would detract.

Thrillers, Fillers, Spillers

A simple green color scheme provides something alike, but differing plants evoke interest and excitement. Notice the thrillers, fillers, spillers?
