Follow two guidelines when designing containers:
- Thrillers, Fillers, and Spillers for content: A simple method of assembling container gardens is to include thrillers, fillers and spillers. Thrillers are plants which rivet attention first: they are striking in color, shape or size (sword-shaped plants are common thrillers). Fillers are the plants around the thrillers. Spillers provide vertical balance, spilling or trailing over the container side.
- Something alike, Something different, for selecting and combining plants.
